Contracts for Contractors

Islanders seeking to make their construction businesses thrive are invited to an online class on Contracts for Contractors. Event is Wednesday June 23rd at 3:00 – 4:30 PM over Zoom, with Jim McAdam, EA at Island Tax Service Inc. presenting. Builders will learn how to make sure everyone involved understands the contracted work in the same way so that they save time and money.

In Jim’s two decades in accounting and tax services, as well as his work in the construction industry, he has worked with many contractors and seen how care with contracts can help them make a profit.

This class will not provide legal advice and should not be construed as legal advice, but is instead a course in customer relations and business management. Students are encouraged to consult with their own lawyer about all contracting matters.

EDC presents a FREE Regenerative Business Design Course

The EDC invites entrepreneurs, business owners and community leaders to join in a FREE, 5-week, intensive course in Regenerative Business Design. Led by renowned permaculture designer““ and educator Patty Love, the course will guide participants through the steps necessary to build – or rebuild – a sustainable business that reflects participants’ core values regarding the environment, society and more. This EDC course will be held online from 9a-12p on May 17, May 25, and June 1, 8, 15.

REGISTRATION COST OF $299/person has been paid by a grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce.

Small business owners often consider how to run a profitable business while staying true to core values. What do entrepreneurs need to know, consider, and plan for in order to launch a business that will have a high likelihood of success and a plan for handling failures and hurdles?

To help answer these questions, this five-week course will be led by Patty Love, Certificated Permaculture Designer, educator & business management consultant. In the course, Ms. Love will incorporate knowledge gained through her decade of permaculture study and practice, along with a formal education in business and twenty years of successful self-employment.

Fully participating in this course – including completing homework between classes and utilizing the tools developed – will empower participants to be prepared to put business plans into action. Students who complete and submit the required course homework by the deadline will receive an Earth Activist Training-issued certificate of completion which can be applied towards a Regenerative Land Management Diploma.

Course is designed for: Anyone who is ready to start a business based on the triple bottom line: people, profit & the planet; earth activists with skills in land management, leadership, or other fields who want to carve their own employment path as an entrepreneur; people ready to pursue their passions through self employment; artists, creators, herbalists, and crafters who want to turn their hobby or second income into a business; self-employed business owners who need to regenerate their plan and get clearer with intention.

Learn Construction Project Management with the EDC

Those seeking to build their career or business in construction are invited to learn Construction Project Management in a FREE online class offered by the Economic Development Council (EDC). Nationally recognized project management expert Jeff Hunt, founder and president of Heritage Construction Services and NAHB accredited instructor, will teach the course. The course will run on Wednesdays, May 19th – June 2nd, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM over Zoom. Prospective students are urged to register quickly – spaces are limited and the registration deadline is May 13th.

REGISTRATION COST OF $349/person has been paid by a grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce.

This free course will benefit anyone in the construction industry and building trades. In participating in the course, business owners and independent contractors may strengthen their businesses, job seekers may boost their competitiveness, employees may gain skills to take on management roles.

Spaces are limited and applicants must be planning to use the skills learned for paying work, either as an employee, contractor, or business owner. Applicants must be San Juan County residents who are 18 years or older.

EDC course in Sustainability Management

The EDC invites community leaders, legislators, entrepreneurs, and business owners to join in a FREE 2-day course in Sustainability Management, led by world-renowned expert in corporate sustainability & social entrepreneurship, Nikos Avlonas. The course will cover in-depth, the topic of community and business sustainability, including trends, global standards, strategies, and communication; participants will receive Sustainability Practitioner certification upon successful completion of the program. The course will be held online on May 20 and 21 from 8-11a. Space is extremely limited; participants are urged to sign up quickly to ensure their space in the course.

Trainer Nikos Avlonas is a leader in Corporate Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship. With multiple awards in sustainability, Avlonas is the founder and President of the Centre for Sustainability & Excellence (CSE), a global Sustainability Strategic Advisory and Training firm with activities worldwide. He is a well-known international speaker in topics related to ESG and CSR and is currently an Adjunct Professor at University of Illinois Chicago.

Avlonas specializes in sustainability, corporate responsibility, carbon reduction and impact investment (ESG ratings). Additionally, he has extensive international experience in executive training & coaching on sustainability topics, having trained over 5,000 managers worldwide, individually and with corporations such as Nestle, Heineken, and Deutsche Post. He is also the co-author of Practical Sustainability Strategies and a contributor to Management Models for the Future, and to publications such as Forbes and Fortune.
