Our Initiatives
In addition to its on-going support of new and growing businesses in the islands, the EDC is currently actively leading or engaged in the following initiatives:
Trades Education
The local community has identified that it has a shortage of skilled tradespeople in the islands to meet the needs of our dynamic and growing community. Addressing this need, the EDC has partnered with local businesses and education institutions to provide training opportunities for youth and residents to enter well paid careers.
The first major program under this initiative was the Marine Education Program in which 17 students in the first program have successfully completed the first stage of their education and are progressing to apprenticeships or further technical education.
We have extended this to courses in construction (Carpentry, Plumbing and Electrical) and other trades, as well as programs for island youth. Over 100 students have taken our courses, and a large fraction of those students entered trades jobs soon afterwards.

Tech Training
In an effort to train local workers into high-wage, skilled tech jobs, the EDC has launched a Tech Accelerator Training Initiative to serve island youth, unemployed and underemployed workers, and business owners needing technological assistance for their enterprises.
The initiative will offer two courses of study – certification courses for people seeking to enter tech careers, and courses in tech for business owners. Students will be grouped into learning cohorts, enabling the EDC to train more people, faster.
This initiative has been launched by the EDC in partnership with the Town of Friday Harbor, San Juan County, and the Raynier Institute.

Knowledge Worker Network
Do you work with code, data, images, words, or similar? Do you need someone who does? We are developing a new Knowledge Worker Network initiative to help knowledge workers – such as programmers, editors, graphic designers, and others – share information, find clients, and build collaborations.
